Gateway Classic cars of Louisville is proud to present this 1985 Mercury Capri McLaren Edition. 1985 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren was an experiment to see if American muscle could be polished to compete with European 2-seaters like the Mercedes SL. the legendary Ford 5.0, this is a nicely preserved example of one of the more interesting footnotes in the Mustang/Capris long, illustrious history and a downright fun car to drive. This example shows only 93,343 miles on the odometer but has only 43,000 since being completely rebuilt and gone through to ensure a wonderful driving experience for years to come. The interior is perhaps the McLarens most dramatic feature. First, the back seat is gone, replaced by a Mercedes-style package shelf thats actually pretty handy for running errands around town. The Recaro buckets are upholstered in high-grade tan leatherette and are every bit as comfortable as they look. The center console almost looks like a factory Capri piece, but is just different enough to make even experts do a double take. The rest, of course, is standard Capri fare, including the highly legible gauges and well-designed switchgear. Standard features include power windows and locks, A/C, and a fantastic AM/FM/CD stereo. Seeing as ASC specializes in convertible conversions for the OEMs, it should be no surprise that theres a snug-fitting black canvas top that stows easily under the flush-fitting rear deck and offers a very Mercedes-like rear window treatment that is surely no coincidence. Power comes from the Mustang GTs 5.0-liter V8, which made a robust 180 horsepower and 260 pounds of torque. Its legendary, so Im sure I dont need to get into the specifics, but its remarkable to see a completely stock and unmodified 5.0 that hasnt been heavily modified and raced. Everything is pretty much the way the factory intended, so it starts easily and runs beautifully and has a nice burble from the throaty dual exhaust. A 5-speed manual transmission makes for easy around-town driving and with the tall overdrive, the freshly installed 3.55 gears in a fresh 8.8-inch axle with limited slip mean that it still loafs along on the highway. One of only 460 Mclaren Capris built in 1985, this is surely one of the very best. Hailing from long-term ownership and with receipts and maintenance records, its a car you can buy with confidence. Modified by ASC in California, this rare 1989 Dodge Dakota Sport Convertible is one of just 2,842 sold that year. For a small premium over regular Dakotas, the Sport added exterior enhancements such as styled wheels, sport stripes, Euro-style blackout treatment, a rear step bumper, interior upgrades that were optional on other Dakotas. The white and black exterior contrasts well with the Bordeaux Red cloth interior with the DAKOTA name embroidered on the seat backs along with matching door panels and carpets, and the seat has a fold-down center armrest. With a thumping 340 under the hood and an appealing paint job, this is an extremely fun car thats also very reasonably priced. This one is the result of a project that transformed your moms grocery-getter into a sharp, pavement-twisting, and fun little compact. The bodywork is well done, and was clearly a solid, original car that needed little sheet metal fabrication. You cant miss the dual white hood scoops, tight white vinyl top, and painted to match Mopar wheels that are wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires. Jumping inside this cool little scamp youll find a nicely presented vinyl blue seats and door panels. The dash is nicely preserved with all the original gauges and just over 51k on the odometer. The current owner has enjoyed this Mopar for the last 15 years and about 4 years ago decided to rebuild the engine and transmission. While most Scamps limped along with a slant-six, this one has had new life breathed into it thanks to a 340 cubic inch V8 pulled from a Plymouth Duster. Appearing as it was factory, the matching turquoise paint on the engine block looks very vintage, and the chrome on the air cleaner and valve covers adds some flash. It was rebuilt about 3,500 miles ago with an upgraded aluminum radiator, 4-barrel carburetor on top, and even clean manifolds. A dual exhaust system peaking out the rear means it sounds as nasty as it looks but it doesnt mind traffic with a big radiator. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission that was also just rebuilt 3,500 miles ago and feeds a robust rear end that doesnt seem to mind the torque. Front-wheel disc brakes deliver reliable stops, undoubtedly assisted by power brake booster. In my opinion, the best feature on this car is the cold original AC compressor. Yes, that is correct, this 1970s R12 A/C compressor is blowing cool air! When was the last time you saw a Plymouth Scamp of any sort, let alone one built to this level? In 1914 they started building their own cars. In 1928, Chrysler acquired Fargo Trucks and Dodge Brothers and also established Plymouth and DeSoto brands. Plymouth was Chryslers lowest priced car, Dodge was next, then Desoto and Chrysler was top of the line. In 1935, Dodge introduced the new DU, not only did it have a revised more narrow grille but it had a lower roofline, lower floor and parking lamps mounted on the front fenders aprons. It also got hydraulic brakes, Autolite ignition, ventilated clutch, automatic choke, leaf spring front suspension, concealed radiator cap, easy steering, and a crank-open windshield. The 116 in wheelbase DU short wheelbase was available in 2 door Coupe, 2 door Convertible, 2 and 4 door Sedan and 2 and 4 door Touring Sedan.
